Farrow & Ball's latest collection of traditional wallpapers proves that traditional can be colorful and exciting. The Baroque Papers is comprised of three designs, each in 21 colorways from the Farrow & Ball palette. The collection embodies the large-scale, dramatic designs reminiscent of the Baroque period. Available this September, The Baroque Papers are made using Farrow & Ball zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints.

Let there be light

Lampshades have the practical purpose of muting the direct glare of a bulb, a seemingly simple task, but one that can be accomplished with great style. Lampshades can be custom fabricated or ready-made, fabric, paper or mica. The style of a lamp can be changed from traditional to contemporary by changing to a different shade style. And finally, scaling the shade to the base is extremely important, and some general rules apply. On a standing or floor lamp, a slightly bigger shade is appropriate, one that just covers the very top of the lamp base. When choosing a shade for a table lamp, the shade should stop an inch or less above the body, so that the neck of the lamp is just visible. Lampshades have three measurements - the diameter of the top opening, the length of the slanted side between the top and bottom, and the diameter of the bottom. The measurements are usually given in that order, for example, a 9" x 12" x 17" lampshade is a fairly standard size.

Shades styles are limited by imagination, but there are several styles that are generally familiar to most.

Empire - A round shade with a straight sloped side, the most popular shade style.

Bell - A distinctive flared shape, like a bell, narrower at the top than at the bottom, a very traditional choice.

Drum - A round or oval shape with straight sides, the top and bottom diameter are generally the same, or very close in size. A classic shape, can be used in a traditional or contemporary setting.

Coolie - A round shade, much like the Empire, but with an exaggerated pitch to the sloped side.

Operating out of her famous New York shop, which she ran for 45 years, she was one of the founders of today's interior design industry. New Fabrics from Lisa Miller for Cloth

Cloth introduces a unique collection of whimsical linen prints perfect for childrens' rooms and available as indoor or outdoor fabrics. Michal Silver, director of Cloth, flew in from London to introduce the new fabrics at the Thomas Lavin showroom, creating a buzz for designers and showroom personnel alike. The fabrics were designed exclusively for Cloth by famed textile wizard Lisa Miller, currently head of her own design firm and known for being a strong creative force in the industry.

The collection will begin with three of Miller's creations: Constellation, Quadrant and Pods (shown here from top t0 bottom). All of the designs are meticulously hand-drawn and feature the one-of-a-kind quality treasured by textile enthusiasts. The designs are single-color motifs with a strong graphic quality and are available in linen, silk or an outdoor fabric. "Compared to other Cloth designs, Miller’s motifs are small and with a distinctive repeat," says Cloth designer Christopher Farr. “Lisa's strengths as a designer come from a subtle and deep absorption in the primal graphic expression found in the unspoilt native cultures of the world, combined with an experiential knowledge of fashion and contemporary art.”

Crewel intentions

Thought to be a technique that is at least a thousand years old, there is no end to the use of crewel in today's interiors. It can be used for bedding, upholstery and drapery, with traditional florals reigning, the contemporary and the whimsical are evident as well. Crewel is wool embroidery, generally on linen or cotton ground, and as it is a natural product, one will occasionally find bits of grass, seed pods or sticks in the textile, a stamp of authenticity, if you will.

Quatre ... what?

Lucky in any language, the quatrefoil is a motif shaped like a clover, literally translated from the French as four leaves. It has been used since at least the 12th century, in heraldic, architectural and military symbolism. Even the legendary French jeweler, Van Cleef & Arpels, uses it extensively in their collections. It is a symbol of symmetry and perfection, and can be found in a vast array of interior furnishings and finishes.

Chinoiserie; a French term, meaning "Chinese-esque", reflecting Chinese artistic influences, it is characterized by the use of fanciful imagery of an imaginary China. It is generally asymmetrical and has contrasts of scale. In order to err on the side of brevity, furnishings get the spotlight today, but chinoiserie is found in fabrics, wallcoverings, lighting, accessories and tableware.

If you are like me, you have been captivated by the third season of AMC's "Madmen", a television drama following the lives of the top-brass of an advertising firm on Madison Avenue in New York during the early '60s. I must admit that I am a poor choice to judge wicker furniture. I grew up surrounded by great wicker designs and I have come to associate it with good times and happiness. I love the stuff and I usually am quite taken with any kind of wicker design, thus making me a poor choice to give an honest opinion. There is something about the natural feel and style of wicker furniture that makes me feel very comfortable and safe.
Having said all of that, I am most dazzled by the recent designs from Joe Ruggiero for Miles Talbott. The furniture is exquisite in its creativity and class, emanating a sense of refined style while retaining the quaint modesty of wicker. Wicker designs are difficult to do on such a large scale, but Ruggiero has created an engaging and attractive collection worth checking out. The pieces are symmetrical and comfortable and would fit nicely on a large patio or deck.

Irish Puca Table from The Stately Homes Collection: Hailing from Moore Abbey, this Irish Rococo carved mahogany Puca Table features a superb demi-lune shaped top laid with a hand-painted faux black marble top veined in gold and random scattered bronze patterning. An elaborate frieze pierced with scrolls rests above three shaped cabriole legs finished in figured maple veneers. The legs are carved on the knees with grimacing leprechaun masks and terminate to distinctive claw and ball feet.

How fortunate are we that textile designer Sina Pearson, founder of Sina Pearson Textiles, took a trip to Sweden, Finland and Denmark to explore her ancestry and her affinity for Scandinavian design and culture! It was this getaway that inspired her new collection, Scandinavia 101, debuting this September. Pearson's fresh approach to traditional Scandinavian textiles is at once luxurious and comforting while maintaining a nostalgic quality reminiscent of an era of sturdy, hand-woven textiles.

The colors are comprised of natural, vegetable dyed yarns that Pearson has collected through the years. The palette pays homage to the region that inspired the collection. Iron ore red is Sweden's most popular house color, warm gold provides a stark contrast to the long winter nights, soft blues lend a tribute to the Baltic sea and the thousands of rivers and lakes and the natural gray hues are symbolic of the tundra regions.

Scandinavia 101 includes four distinct, yet coordinating patterns. Spun is a woven wool with an irregular slub cotton yarn. Lina was named for a Swedish cousin and consists of a sturdy lines in a polished satin weave. Woods is a modern take on a classic Scandinavian geometric design. Thought I might share a couple of words and examples to highlight the differences of the fabulous French periods known as Louis XIV, XV, and XVI.

Though it was originally brought to France by Catherine de Medici, the Italian bride of King Henri II, it was Louis XIV (reign 1643-1715), the Sun King, that made the Baroque style blossom into the first of the great court styles, with the Palace of Versailles being the greatest example. Exemplified by magnificence, majesty, monumental scale, gilding and over-the-top opulence. The colors were lush and saturated, the textiles richly patterned and sumptuous. This period was the first true expression of French decorative style.

The young Louis XV (reign 1715-1774) moved the court from Versailles to Paris, and the Rococo period began with a flourish of curves, cabrioles and a more intimate scale. As Baroque was a style of the court, Rococo belonged to the nobility, and the royal mistress, Madame Pompadour, was the gracious and elegant leading lady. Charm, luxury, the naturalistic motifs of shells, fish and foliage, and a more restrained color palette of warm pastels marked this period. The textiles were luxurious, but light.

Marking a return to classic traditions and styles, Neoclassicism coincided with the reign of Louis XVI (1774-1793) and his queen, Marie Antoinette. The colors were a livelier version of the ice-cream palette of the Rococo, with beautiful silks, damasks and velvets providing lush formality.

The Pure Collection from Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman (EF + LM) is simply gorgeous — on so many levels. Sustainable design, luxurious inspiration and quality craftsmanship are behind every breath taking piece. The eco-friendly materials used in fabrication include FSC certified woods/veneers, low VOC water-based finishes and paints, water-based adhesives, recycled metals, soy-based foam cushions, feather ticking comprised of bamboo and organic cotton and natural jute webbing.

One of my favorite pieces in the expansive Pure Collection is the Paramount Sofa. The sofa exudes comfort at every curve. The Pure Collection designer, Skip Rumley, revealed that the Paramount was inspired from a sofa spotted in a hotel lobby in Paris. He kept the idea of the shape and refined it a bit by curving the corners, increasing the depth and length and tufting the bench seat to add texture.

Of course, if I had to choose a favorite piece from the collection, I would choose the Dogwood Bench. I was instantly drawn to the uniqueness of the shape and the leather strap work holding the bolster cushions. Rumley's goal in the design process was to create a bench with an architectural edge that was also comfortable to sit on. I say mission accomplished! He also revealed that he found the equestrian quality of the strap work alluring — again, I agree. My feeling for the Dogwood Bench would best be summarized in a phrase I reserve for my favorites: I want one!

In my home, I take many different things into account when buying furniture, but the one thing that I rely on the most is comfort. If a product is not comfortable, I don't want it in my living space. I am not one of those people who will sacrifice large amounts of comfort for style, it just is not me. That is why I was so impressed with the Duncan Chair from Dessin Fournir. The chair features simple blocked feet and arms, offering a sense of modesty and quiet comfort in a chair market often characterized by over-the-top designs. This is the kind of chair you want for the Superbowl or other events that would require you to stay motionless for long periods of time.
